さて、オールドフィルムカメラを入手するとやることがあります。
はい、モルト交換ですね❗️
シリアルナンバーからFが1970年代、F3が1980年代の販売。当然ながらモルトは劣化しているわけです。
で、Fは現在試写中ですのでF3Pのモルト交換から始めました。このF3P、さすがプレスモデルということで、密閉性が高い作りをしているそうでモルトは最小限のようです。
だからなんですね、Fはファインダー内モルトカスだらけだったけどF3は気になるほどではなかったのは。
KONICA C35の時にはなかったミラー受けのモルト、ちょっと緊張しました。
F一桁機はファインダーとスクリーンが外せるので、外せるものは全部外し、ミラーにモルトカスが飛ぶのを極力抑えるためにマスキング（ペーパーウエス）しました。
やっぱり最も面倒なのが古いモルトを剥がすことですよね。無水エタノールをたっぷり染み込ませて、こそげ取るんですが中々綺麗にならず、ゴシゴシやるとカスが飛んでしまう。ここを良い加減にすると新しいものがすぐ剥がれちゃうとかいう情報もあって、念入りにやりました。
さていよいよモルト貼り。ミラー受けのモルトサイズは…
2.5mm×38mm、厚さ2mm
貼るのはそんなに苦労しませんでした。
貼るのに苦労したのは裏蓋の溝へのモルト貼りです。今回は毛糸を使いました。太い場合、縒り合わさったものを解いて、と言うのを見たので3本縒りだったのを1本にして使ったんですが、解かなくても良かったなと思っています。使った毛糸はダイソーのアクリルヤーンという商品。
写真は貼る前かな。ボンドは「Gクリヤー」と言う合成ゴム系接着剤。爪楊枝の先端に付けて溝の中にチョンチョンチョンと数カ所に付ける感じにするんですが、このボンド、糸引くんです。塗りにくい塗りにくい。
毛糸も爪楊枝で押さえつけていくんですが毛羽立つ毛羽立つ💦毛羽だった繊維は後で小さなハサミでカットしていきます。
ボンドが乾くのに5〜10分待って蓋を閉めて一晩寝かして毛糸を馴染ませます。毛糸は加水分解しないそうです。
ふぅ〜なんだかんだ言って2時間くらいやってたなぁ😂
Fの試写が終わったら、今度はF3の試写。そしてFのモルト貼り。F3の写りやいかに。

When you get your hands on a vintage film camera, there's one thing you almost always have to do.
Yep, you guessed it—replacing the light seals (molto) ❗️
Based on the serial numbers, my Nikon F was sold in the 70s and the F3 in the 80s. Naturally, the foam seals have completely deteriorated over the decades.
Since the F is currently out for a test roll, I started with the F3P. Being a "Press" model, I’ve heard it has a highly airtight design, meaning it uses a minimal amount of foam.
That explains why my F was full of foam crumbs inside the viewfinder, while the F3 wasn't nearly as bad.
Unlike when I worked on my Konica C35, this one required replacing the mirror damper foam, which made me a bit nervous.
Since F-series flagship cameras allow you to remove the viewfinder and focusing screen, I stripped it down as much as possible. I also masked off the mirror with paper wipes to keep any debris from flying onto it.
By far the most tedious part is scraping off the old gunk. I soaked it in plenty of anhydrous ethanol and scraped away, but it’s tough to get it perfectly clean. If you scrub too hard, the crumbs fly everywhere, but if you get lazy, the new seals won't stick properly—at least according to what I've read. So, I took my time and did it thoroughly.
Finally, it was time to apply the new seals. The mirror damper size was:
2.5mm x 38mm, 2mm thick.
Applying this part wasn't too much of a struggle.
The real challenge, however, was the light seal grooves on the camera back. This time, I decided to use yarn. I had read that if the yarn is too thick, you should unstrand it. So, I unraveled a 3-ply yarn into a single strand, though in hindsight, I think I could have used it as-is. I used "Acrylic Yarn" from Daiso.
(The photo is probably from before I started.) For the adhesive, I used "G Clear" (a synthetic rubber glue). I applied tiny dots inside the groove using the tip of a toothpick, but man, this glue strings like crazy! It was so finicky to work with.
I pressed the yarn in with a toothpick, but it kept fraying and getting fuzzy💦 I ended up having to trim the fuzzy fibers later with tiny scissors.
After letting the glue dry for about 5 to 10 minutes, I closed the back and let it sit overnight to let the yarn settle. Apparently, yarn doesn't suffer from hydrolysis like foam does!
Whew... all said and done, I think I spent about two hours on this😂
Once I finish the test roll on the Nikon F, it’ll be the F3's turn. And then, the F gets its new seals. I can't wait to see how the F3 performs❗️
